The Washington Post wrote Tuesday that Sandy, the “super storm” that ravaged the East Coast on Monday, provided Obama with a "commander-in-chief moment." And he appears to have seized it.
A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds Obama winning high marks from voters for his handling of Sandy.
Nearly eight in ten likely voters, or 78%, said Obama has done a “good” or “excellent” job responding to the natural disaster. The federal government’s general response earned nearly as many positive reviews. Even two-thirds of Mitt Romney supporters said Obama is doing well on Sandy. The "wave" of polling on those questions was conducted Tuesday night.
Foregoing campaigning, the president has made himself available to residents and lawmakers in states hit the hardest—including a tour Wednesday of the damage on the Jersey shore with Republican Governor Chris Christie.
Christie, who gave keynote speech at the GOP convention in August, has praised the president’s response as “wonderful." On Wednesday, he added: “I cannot thank the president enough.”
In the Post/ABC News poll, Obama and Mitt Romney were tied at 49% each in the presidential contest.
