President Obama is headed back out on the road.

The President will travel to Michigan today, where he'll tour a Daimler diesel plant and then make remarks on the economy. Today's trip will be one of several others the President has made in an effort to push his effort to extend tax cuts for the middle class ahead of the fiscal cliff deadline. Meanwhile, negotiations in Washington continue, albeit quietly. Yesterday the President hosted Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) at the White House, the first face-to-face meeting between the two men in nearly a month. Neither side has released details on the discussion, part of a strategy to avoid leaks that could compromise a potential deal. The meeting followed a visit to the White House by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Friday.

The lines of communication are clearly open, but whether it will end in a deal is unclear. And whether the Congress will sign on to a plan endorsed by both the President and Speaker Boehner is hardly decided. Alex hosts the show from Washington today, and we'll bring you the very latest at noon ET on msnbc.
