Republican Senate candidates Richard Mourdock in Indiana and Todd Akin in Missouri–whose Senate victories seemed all but assured at one point—lost after making eyebrow-raising remarks about rape and pregnancy. Akin bizarrely claimed that in cases of “legitimate rape” women’s bodies could block unwanted pregnancies. And Mourdock, who clearly didn’t learn from Akin, said pregnancy from rape “is something God intended to happen.” Democrats immediately pounced, arguing that the remarks were evidence of the GOP’s extreme view on women’s rights.
