On the eve of his official swearing-in ceremony, President Obama on Saturday rolled up his sleeves for National Day of Service, and called on Americans to do the same.

First lady Michelle Obama joined the president at the kickoff of the inaugural weekend to lend a hand at Burrville Elementary School in Washington, D.C., where first family helped stain bookcases for the school's makeover. “Somehow Michelle looked stylish the whole time she was doing it,” the president said of the first lady.

This past week both the president and the first lady published YouTube videos pledging their continued commitment to service and volunteer work, inviting Americans to get involved this weekend in the lead up to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday. “Inaugurations are about more than just celebrating, they’re about coming together to make our country a better place,” Obama said in the video address.

Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill also joined the day of service by filling care packages for the troops at the D.C. Armory.

Chelsea Clinton got the festivities for the 57th presidential inauguration weekend off to a start Saturday morning as the National Day of Service Honorary Chair.
