“We think it’s reasonable to provide mandatory instant background checks for every sale at every gun show. No loopholes anywhere, for anyone,” NRA head Wayne LaPierre said in May 1999, shortly after the shooting at Columbine. That video resurfaced recently and was played last night in a Super Bowl ad funded by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a gun control group lead by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
“Let’s check that one off!” Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough said, referring to gun control advocates' agenda, with a laugh.
“No, because yesterday he changed his mind,” co-host Mika Brzezinski responded.
“It’s a fraud to call it universal, it’s never going to be universal, the criminals aren’t going to comply with it, they could care less,” he said. “We ought to quit calling it a universal check, the real title ought to be the check on law abiding people all over this country” LaPierre said on Fox News yesterday.
The Morning Joe crew pushed back against LaPierre’s associations.
“The argument that only law that a criminal would violate is a law you shouldn’t pass, is an argument against all laws,” New York Magazine's John Heilemann responded.
