Equal pay for equal work? It's more complicated than you might think.
Although women make on average 77 cents for every dollar men make, Senate Republicans continued to block pay equity legislation last year.
In June 2012, the Senate fell eight votes short of the 60 required to open debate on an update to the existing Lilly Ledbetter (a plaintiff in a 2009 lawsuit and namesake of the first bill President Obama signed as president requiring parity for female employees' pay in line with their male colleagues's) law. The legislation sought to prohibit companies from retaliating against employees who inquired about paycheck disparities.
The same measure fell flat in the Senate two years earlier, when every Republican in the Senate voted against opening debate.
