Previewing Prop 8

Today, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on California Prop 8, which bans same-sex marriage.

Today, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on California Prop 8, which bans same-sex marriage. On Wednesday the high court will hear oral arguments on the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). If the Supreme Court goes as far as to strike down DOMA that would not automatically require states to permit same-sex marriage, but a ruling in the Prop 8 case could be a game changer for all states when it comes to same-sex marriage.

While the high court will not issue a ruling until this summer, on Monday’s show Ari Melber pointed out how there has been a real shift among the political leadership when it comes to supporting gay rights.

For whatever reason a “number of federal officials, highly visibly people now in both parties, are not only saying people should have this right, which is the moral position, but also saying I changed my mind," Melber said.

However, as Cycle co-host Krystal Ball said, “I don’t know how the justices will rule, I don’t pretend to have any insights into their minds here.”

To give us some insight into today’s hearings NBC’s Pete Williams and Huffington Posts’s Mike Sacks join the show. See you at 3 p.m.
