Williams added that in oral arguments Wednesday morning, Justice Anthony Kennedy, the key swing vote, said he was troubled by several aspects of the law, including that it applies even in states that allow same-sex marriage.

The law prevents same-sex couples from receiving federal benefits that straight couples get.
