Deputy Chief of Mission in Libya Gregory Hicks gave a detailed account of the tumultuous night in Benghazi, Libya when four Americans were killed, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

During a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing, Hicks recounted the texts and phone calls he exchanged with Stevens on the night of September 11, 2012.

When Hicks learned of the attack and got the ambassador on the phone, he recounted Stevens saying, "Greg, we’re under attack."

Hicks described the moment he later learned of Stevens’ death as “the saddest phone call I have ever had in my life.”
