Rolling Stone is confirming that journalist Michael Hastings died on Tuesday in a car accident in Los Angeles. He was 33.

Writer Tim Dickinson notes: "Hastings' unvarnished 2010 profile of McChrystal in the pages of Rolling Stone, "The Runaway General," captured the then-supreme commander of the U.S.-led war effort in Afghanistan openly mocking his civilian commanders in the White House. The maelstrom sparked by its publication concluded with President Obama recalling McChrystal to Washington and the general resigning his post."

Hastings joined Morning Joe in 2010 to discuss the impact of his Rolling Stone profile of General McChrystal, and you can watch the video above.

Hastings also joined the show earlier this year to discuss his latest e-book "Panic 2012: The Sublime and Terrifying Inside Story of Obama's Final Campaign." Hastings discussed traveling with the Obama campaign, why he ruffled the campaign's feathers one evening and why he had the "Mean Girls" treatment while traveling with the White House Press Corps.
