Advocates of marriage equality celebrated a landmark day in the gay-rights movement on Wednesday after the Supreme Court handed down a pair of decisions that paved a path toward universal marriage rights for same-sex couples.
In a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) which had previously barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages. And in a separate ruling released just minutes after DOMA was declared unconstitutional, the Court took the Proposition 8 case and cleared the way for legal gay marriage in California.
