Friday afternoon, California Gov. Jerry Brown told the state’s Department of Public Health to notify clerks and registrars in all 58 California counties that same-sex marriage is now legal in California and that marriage licenses must be issued to same-sex couples immediately.
And at 4 p.m. PST, a spokesman for the attorney general's office confirmed that California Attorney General Kamala Harris was about to begin officiating the marriage of Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, a Berkeley couple who were two of the four plaintiffs in Prop 8, one of the Supreme Court cases decided this week that opened the way to marriage equality.
Harris tweeted Friday afternoon,

The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that California could allow same-sex marriages, but most observers expected it to take weeks to implement the ruling.
About an hour after Stier and Perry were married, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa performed a wedding ceremony for the other pair of Prop 8 plaintiffs, Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo. Asked if they would love and cherish each other, in prosperity and adversity, as long as they both shall live, they replied together, "We do."
